Justin Turner replaced on NLCS roster

LOS ANGELES — Third baseman Justin Turner is out for the National League Championship Series after being sidelined by a Grade 2 left hamstring stress sustained in the Dodgers’ 9-2 loss to the Braves in Game 4 on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. It’s a huge loss for Los Angeles, which routes Atlanta in the series, 3-1.

“Obviously, it sucked,” best fielder Mookie Betts stated. “He’s such a huge part of our lineup, a huge part of our, well, everything — the culture, everything. When you think of ‘L.A. Dodgers,’ you think of Justin Turner. So not having him in the lineup makes it a lot harder.”

Filling Turner’s put on Los Angeles’ NLCS lineup is infielder Andy Burns, who last appeared in a Major League video game on June 22.

When supervisor Dave Roberts discussed Burns as a prospective alternative for Turner following Wednesday’s video game, it came as a little bit of a surprise. Signed as a Minor League complimentary representative in December, Burns appeared in 9 video games for the Dodgers in mid-June, getting 3 hits — including his very first in the Major Leagues — and 3 strolls. Since then, Burns was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on June 23, designated for task and launched on July 20, then re-signed to a Minor League offer on Sept. 10 — prior to the Sept. 15 postseason lineup eligibility due date.

According to Roberts, the primary factor Burns was chosen over infielder/outfielder Zach McKinstry and outfielder/first baseman Billy McKinney is that Burns, like Turner, strikes right-handed. Third base was likewise Burns’ main position in the Minors, and he made 2 looks there for the Dodgers, also.

Burns, 31, made his go back to MLB this year after 5 seasons bouncing in between the Minors, KBO and the Australian Baseball League. In 58 video games throughout 2 Minor League levels in 2021, he slashed .237/.374/.425 with 7 homers.

To include Burns on the 40-man lineup, the Dodgers designated for task right-hander Edwin Uceta. The Dominican right-hander made 14 looks with the Dodgers this season, going 0-3 with a 6.64 AGE.
