OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay on Thursday afternoon pleaded innocent to a misdemeanor charge of criminal home damage of less than $1,000 after he was apprehended Wednesday night by authorities.
Gay, 23, was launched from the detention center in Johnson County, Kansas on Thursday afternoon.
Gay’s representatives, Maxx Lepsettler and Ryan Rubin, stated in a declaration that Gay was visiting his child when he entered into an argument with the kid’s mom, who called authorities.
An authorities report approximated the overall home damage at $225 for a vacuum, mobile phone screen protector, humidifier and damage to a wall and door frame.
The mom of Gay’s 3-month-old child has actually asked for a civil security order, which suggests Gay is not permitted to have contact with either of them till the case is heard by a civil judge.
The Class B non-person misdemeanor “constitutes a domestic violence offense,” according to court records. He is set up to go back to court on March 2.
Gay was not at practice Thursday and those offered to talk with press reporters delayed all concerns about his status for Sunday’s AFC divisional championship game versus the Buffalo Bills to coach Andy Reid, who does not speak with the media once again till Friday.
“I’m going to leave that up to Andy. I’m sure he’ll address it,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said. “But if this occurred in a video game and it was an injury, we’d simply run that method. But we’ll see what occurs.”
Gay, the Chiefs’ second-round draft choice in 2020, began 11 video games this season plus the Chiefs’ wild-card round playoff win last weekend versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has 2 interceptions and 0.5 sacks.
Earlier this season, Gay discussed his battles with psychological health, stating that he was “going through some things, man,” but that he wanted to be an example for other NFL players that keep such issues bottled up by being open and honest about them.
“All I can state about Willie is I like dealing with him,” Spagnuolo stated. “He’s been excellent. I believe you understand he’s had an infant; I speak with him about that a lot. I simply hope it exercises best for everyone.”
