Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – Out of gas, however not concepts, discuss the current Erik Karlsson trade reports.
Marek: “To begin things off. This began with a discussion on a radio program previously on today, was our conversation on the San Jose Sharks and Erik Karlsson. And I asked you early in the early morning if there was anything in between San Jose and the Ottawa Senators. Vis-a-vie, Erik Karlsson, and you stated, ‘give me some time, I’ll return you.’ And then on the radio reveal you stated, ‘there has actually been conversation in between the 2 sides on Erik Karlsson, and after that, boom, brand-new cycle starts.
What is the current, if there is undoubtedly, a most current on this concern?”
Friedman: “I don’t believe there is anything extremely brand-new as we do this at this time. Mike Grier set a great deal of this in movement when at the GM conferences he stated that yes, it was something that he would think about.
Obviously, if it was something Erik Karlsson will think about. He’s got the supreme say over this. He’s got the no-move stipulation. But, Grier sort of tossed it out there and all of us began chasing after. Yes, you offered me a research project. Yes, I did it. I need to state I didn’t constantly work so difficult on my research projects when I was in fact in school.
I believe there are groups that have actually sort of talked, and I believe the Senators are one. Number one, I must state, I don’t believe anybody’s gone to Karlsson yet to state, ‘would you waive for here?’ I don’t believe we’re at that point or anywhere near near that.
It’s such a complex offer, and I believe among the important things that makes it really complex is that, the number of groups have the capability to actually do this? And Ottawa with a great deal of their legal commitments from gamers who you’re not going to wish to trade. Like, I don’t believe they can do it, and I believe that’s sort of where it went there.
But, you understand what, I do believe there are some groups that are going to take a look at it. I do believe there’s some groups who have some interest, however a great deal of it boils down to A) where is Karlsson happy to go, and B) what’s San Jose wants to do.”
Marek: “This one, if it indeed does happen at any point to whichever team, this one has third team screaming at me.”
Friedman: “Yes, double retention.”
Marek: “When you consider salary retention because even if the San Jose Sharks take a major chomp out of the contract, you’re still going to probably need a third team here now. Not unlike, I remember you and I talking, actually when we were in Paris, about Patrick Kane and how if they were going to move him before the season there would have to be a third team involved most likely. I kind of get the same feeling here with Erik Karlsson. Mainly because, not only because it’s $11.5 but it’s four more seasons Elliotte.”
Friedman: “But that’s the issue. I believe that Patrick Kane or Jonathan Toews is a simpler one to do, 3rd group retention since it’s short-term.
Let’s simply state for enhance’s sake. Arizona might do it. At some time, Arizona is going to need to begin paying a few of these young men it’s got. And who understands? We don’t all understand where we’re going to remain in 4 years. You take a look at all the trending subjects on twitter tonight and there’s a world loaded with individuals anticipating to awaken and not see twitter tomorrow. So I indicate, who understands what’s going to take place out there?
How lots of groups are going to want to state, ‘we’re going to have an interest in maintaining for 4 years. That is a truly hard ask. Even for a group that is restoring today. Arizona eventually in time, they’re going to need to begin attempting to win and paying their men. That’s a huge, huge dedication, Jeff, and I’m not persuaded there are groups out there that are going to wish to do that.”
Marek: “Don’t disagree.”
Friedman: “This is my opinion. I want to state this very clearly. They asked us tonight in that awful burning segment to pick a team with Karlsson. This is my opinion. But the team I wonder about is Florida.”
Marek: “Why is that?”
Friedman: “Florida is a really skilled offensive team. they’ve got a lot of money coming off their cap after this year. They’re going to have bit more flexibility. He fits with them. The other one, and again, this is purely my opinion. How many defensemen does Washington have signed after this year?”
Marek: “John Carlson. One. Well they have two RFAs but they have Matt Irwin a UFA. Erik Gustavsson’s a UFA. Trevor van Riemsdyk and Nick Jensen are UFAs as well.”
Friedman: “and so is Orlov.”
Marek: “So yes, I didn’t say Orlov is as well a UFA.”
Friedman: “So those are the 2 groups I take a look at. I believe Florida’s going to have a bit more versatility and Washington’s going to have a great deal of versatility on defense.
And once again, this not me digging on it. This is me taking a look at it and stating, see scenarios where those 2 groups are gamers here. But once again, Karlsson’s going to wish to go and there’s got to be a determination to cut a deal. But, those are the ones that sort of stick in my head to see.
I’m sure there’s going to be more weaves as this goes.”
Marek: “The something I question with the Washington Capitals is, and we discussed this on radio recently, the Washington Capitals are going to do whatever it requires to get Ovechkin that record. To catch Gretzky and beat Gretzky. I understand John Carlson is currently there as a right-hand shot. Do you desire another right-hand shot Karlsson, in an Eriksson, to guarantee somebody’s getting the puck to Ovechkin?
There’s not going to be any restore here for the Caps as long as Ovechkin’s chasing this record. There simply going to keep putting in gamers to offer him the very best possible possibility to get it.”
Friedman: “I don’t disagree with you. The something there is, the Karlsson-Burns thing didn’t operate in San Jose and now you’re taking a look at it with Burns in Carolina, Karlsson’s red hot in San Jose. So perhaps he may not desire that.
Again, don’t anyone keep up that we’re reporting this. This is 2 people spitting here. Like offer us a break. Don’t radio us on the very first day on Mastedon or whatever the hell we’re going to.”
Marek: “Oh, is that where we going Friday morning? Okay, good.”
Friedman: “Anyway, Florida’s number one. That one jump right into my head, and Washington is another, simply because they got no defensemen for next year yet.”
