Packers' Matt LaFleur says blockbuster Davante Adams trade to Raiders 'was a tough one for me personally'

So much has actually gone on this offseason that the Davante Adams trade to the Las Vegas Raiders seems like it occurred last month instead of simply 10 days back. While the remainder of the NFL is carrying on to the next earth-shattering relocation that is undoubtedly on the horizon, the Packers are still reeling from the loss of their All-Pro pass-catching weapon.

“Sometimes you got to make some tough decisions,” head coach Matt LaFleur informed NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero at the Annual League Meeting on Sunday. “Certainly appreciate everything Davante brought to our team. I mean, he is the best receiver in the National Football League, so that was a tough one for me personally and for our organization.”

Adams’ relationship with Green Bay liquified throughout their stalled agreement negations that went back to last summertime. Things reached a tipping point when the Packers chosen to put the franchise tag on the 29-year-old and after that Adams notified the group that he would not use it in 2022. When he was traded to the Raiders, the club then reversed and provided him a five-year, $141.25 million agreement. The Packers were apparently going to provide Adams a comparable agreement, however the receiver eventually chosen to play somewhere else.

“Well, there really wasn’t anything to talk about,” stated LaFleur when asked if there was ever any speak about attempting to persuade Adams to remain. “I mean, you’re going through a contract negotiation and certainly it was just one of those deals where, like I said, a lot of tough decisions had to be made.”

In return for Adams, Green Bay got 2 draft choices, consisting of the No. 22 general choice in the preliminary of the 2022 NFL Draft. There, the group might want to start restoring their receiver space as they want to compete with back-to-back MVP Aaron Rodgers.

“We’re going to absolutely have to add some pieces to that room and, you know, we got to construct our offense around what we have,” stated LaFleur. “You can’t look back and you gotta move forward.”

Replacing Adams’ production will be no little job for Green Bay. Over the last 2 seasons, Adams saw 318 targets, balanced over 1,400 backyards a year, and has 29 overall goals.
