Real Madrid vs. Atalanta rating: Benzema and Ramos on target as Zidane’s men dominate to reach quarterfinals

Real Madrid are into the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after a 2-0 win over Atalanta BC at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano on Tuesday completed 3-0 aggregate triumph, finishing what they started with a one-goal first leg success in Bergamo, Italy.

Karim Benzema scored the first goal of the game 10 minutes before half-time when visiting goalkeeper Marco Sportiello gifted the Spaniards the opportunity with a poor pass and  Luka Modric teed up the French striker from point blank range.

Atalanta needed to fly out of the traps, and they did make a good start with Robin Gosens denied by Thibaut Courtois early on when he should have scored but otherwise it rarely looked like advancing was in the Serie A side’s capabilities.

However, it did not matter after 59 minutes as Rafael Toloi conceded a penalty via VAR for a foul on Vinicius Junior and the returning Sergio Ramos converted to move ahead of the likes of Ronaldo Nazario, David Villa and Zinedine Zidane for UCL goals scored with 15.

La Dea threatened a comeback in the final 10 minutes when Luis Muriel scored from a free kick to set up a nervy finish, but they always needed two more goals and Real quickly extinguished any lingering hopes with a killer goal.

Lucas Vazquez fed the ball to Marco Asensio just two minutes later to put Gian Piero Gasperini’s men to bed for good and there was no further reaction from the Orobici as their dreams of a second straight quarterfinal died out.

Real Madrid 3, Atalanta 1 (4-1 on aggregate)
